The word "planner" describes an object used to capture events and notes linked to a specific date. The most common example of this is a calendar or a diary. Edward Gorey illustrations have been used for planners since 1979. Originally, Gorey produced illustrations specifically for each planner, but mostly the images were taken from Gorey’s books. Pomegranate has been the most prolific publisher of Gorey calendars, usually publishing multiple planners in varied formats each year.
Some planners include unabridged or abridged material from Gorey's primary works. Some authorities would consider these planners to be primary works themselves.
Inevitably, calendars & diaries are almost always designed & published the year before they are intended to be used. However, throughout this guide I will be using the "Calendar year" rather than the publication/copyright year.
Non-Pomegranate Published Calendars
The vast majority of calendars continue to be published by Pomegranate. However, there have been several other publishers involved, especially before the year 2000.Workman Publishing is an American company founded in 1968 by Peter Workman (1938-2013). It traded as an independent company for 53 years until it joined The Hachette Book Group (HBG) in 2021.
After major success with the book series "Cat" by artist B. (Bernard) "Hap" Kliban (1935-1990), which became a New York Times bestseller in 1975, Workman Publishing began publishing calendars in 1978.
The same year as launching their first calendar, they worked with Edward Gorey to illustrate the 1979 Gorey Endings calendar and then again for the 1980 Gorey Details calendar.
Workman Publishing produced large-format spiral-bound calendars, which were housed in large envelopes designed (although rarely used) for posting.
The 1979 calendar was also accompanied by the envelope/cover design being produced as small format poster. These can be distinguished from the front cover and envelope artwork by the blank space at the top of the design.
Carlson & Turner - The Missing Book
Carlson & Turner Antiquarian & Scholarly Books (now known as Carlson Turner Antiquarian Books & Bookbindery) is an antiquarian bookshop founded by Norma Carlson and David Turner based in Portland, Maine. The address is situated across the road from the oldest cemetery in Portland: Eastern Cemetery (est. 1668).Carlson & Turner commissioned artists and designers to create a small run of fine press broadside calendars, which included new artwork from Edward Gorey (for the 1988 calendar) and Robert Crumb (for the 1990 calendar). Distinguished book graphic artist Bruce Kennett, who was heavily influenced by William A. Dwiggins, designed both.
The 1988 Edward Gorey commission is entitled The Missing Book and is probably the most sought-after Gorey calendar.
Carlton Cards is a greetings card company founded in Toronto, Canada, in 1920. It was bought by American Greetings in 1956.
This 1989 13-month calendar is somewhat unusual as it has well-known Gorey art (from various Gorey books and two collaborations with Peter Neumeyer) being used to illustrate a story written by Jimmie Fitzgerald.
On the inside cover is a list of 1989 holidays and a 1989 year-to-view calendar with some additional Notes lines. This is followed by a title page (which has sometimes been signed by Gorey). The next 24-pages are laid out with a Gorey illustration with Gorey-esque words by Jimmie Fitzgerald (top) and the month-to-view calendar (bottom).
The last month is a January 1990 month-to-view page that is accompanied by 1990s holidays, 1990 year-to-view and additional Notes lines instead of a Gorey illustration. Finally, the last pages include Wedding Anniversaries Traditional & Contemporary gifts, Birthstones and Flowers, additional Notes lines and then a Phone Directory and Special Occasions lines.
Harvest/HBJ - Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
Harvest was an imprint of the HBJ (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich) publishing company. Harcourt, Brace & Howe was created by Alfred Harcourt, Donald Brace and Will David Howe in 1919. Howe left the company in 1921 and the name changed to Harcourt, Brace & Company. In 1954 William Jovanovich became president of the company and publicly merged it with the World Book Company (founded in 1905) to create Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. In 1970 it changed its name to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. General Cinema Corporation purchased the company in 1991, changing its name to Harcourt General then shortening the name to Harcourt, Inc. in 1999.In 1982, HBJ published T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats with illustrations by Edward Gorey. This version became very popular and has been in constant print, across multiple companies and publishers since.
This popularity spread into calendar form in 1989 with a black-wire spiral-bound week-to-view engagement diary with a red cover. This format proved so successful that it was reprinted in 1991 with a blue cover and then again in 1996 with an orange cover.
Harry N. Abrams - The World of Edward Gorey
Harry N. Abrams, Inc. (now known as Abrams) was founded in 1949 and was the first book company in the U.S.A. to specialise in the creation and distribution of high-quality art books. In 1996 Abrams published The World of Edward Gorey by Clifford Ross and Karen Wilkin. The popularity of the book resulted in reprints over the following years and a 1999 wall calendar.
Calendars with Gorey-related material sometimes pop up in unpredictable places. Two great examples of this are: The American Quilters Society 1993 wall-calendar which featured a quilted design based on Gorey's work for PBS Mystery!, and the Sunderland Printing "A Year of Giving" 2014 wall calendar created as a client gift. This independent printing firm has been based in Cape Cod since 1984, enjoying the patronage of both Gorey himself and The Edward Gorey House. They could not resist promoting The Edward Gorey House for the Halloween month of October. Two other calendars that belong in this section are the 2001 and 2002 Book of the Month calendars which are said to contain Gorey - although I have yet to find an example!
Pomegranate Published Calendars
Pomegranate is a company that was founded in 1968 under the name ThoFra Distributors; it adopted the name Pomegranate in 1971. They publish books, calendars, journals, postcards, jigsaws, games, stationery and other items. In 1984, they produced their first Edward Gorey engagement calendar: An Edward Gorey Bestiary. Since 1998, they have produced Gorey items every year, including an uninterrupted run of large-format wall calendars since 1999 and small-format wall calendars since 2000.
The wall-mounted formats describe calendars designed to be hung from a wall, office divider or similar surface.

The Pomegranate Large and Small format calendars are the standard wall-mounted calendar design featuring a slightly thicker laminate card front and back with paper month pages within. They span 12 (Jan-Dec) or 13 months (Jan-Jan) and have a hole for hanging.
From 1999-2025, they all originally came with brown strengthened card insert and were shrink-wrapped.
In 2026, the packaging design was changed to use less plastic, opting for a wrap-around paper design with an "Enviromental Sustainability" sticker used to keep the pages secured in transit. A brown strengthening card insert is still used.
The large format went through three early size changes. The 1999 The Doubtful Guest is more rectangular in shape, measuring H30.5cm x W33.8cm. The 2000 The Gashlycrumb Tinies starts to look more like the now typical design with a width of 30.6cm (which remains the standard) but the height is 33.8cm. Then from 2001's Neglected Murderessess the height changes to 33.1cm which is continued with the width of 30.6cm.
For 2026 the size changes again, this time to make it square: ~30.6cm x ~30.6cm.
The small format calendar started with The Doubtful Guest in 2000, this measured ~14.7cm x ~14.7cm, these dimensions persisted until The Deranged Cousins in 2003 changed to 17.8cm x 17.8cm. These dimensions carried on until the Edward Gorey: Creatures Real and Imagined in 2018 changed to a rectangular H17.9cm x W16.6cm. This shape continued until the design shift in 2026 changed the size to: H19.1cm x W15.3cm.

The Pomegranate tear-off format calendar is a 366/365-page day-to-view calendar with the intention is that each page is ripped off to reveal the next day. Pomegranate made seven versions of this calendar between 2000 and 2007 before discontinuing the design.
The Pomegranate tear-off calendars always came in a cardboard box with the calendar itself shrink-wrapped inside. The calendar pad was glued onto a black plastic mount to make wall-hanging or freestanding simple. They have a copy of the front cover on the top of the tear-off pad, then a copyright page, followed by the tear-off calendar pages with a piece of Gorey art and accompanying words; information about the Gorey piece source; day, month, day-of-the-week, copyright and a few lines for notes; holiday information and major lunar stages. Weekends were merged into a single page. At the back are some additional Notes pages, year-to-view page of the current year and succeeding year, another copy of the copyright page and finally the backing-board which is glued to the plastic mount.
The title is always A GOREY YEAR with a subtitle of either 366/365 Days of the Art and/& Words of EDWARD GOREY.
The 2000 calendar is the only example where the date is not published on the front of the box and it also only has "A Gorey" instead of the full title (the full title is used on the back cover). All tear-off calendars include the date on both short-sides. The 2000-2002 calendars are a smaller format, with a box that measured ~13.0cm x ~15.5cm. The 2003-2007 boxes measured ~15.2cm x ~17.5cm.
The book formats describe a set of calendars & diaries that are presented like books - either bound in the standard hardback pasteboard case binding or spiral-bound with wire using the wire-o/spiral-o design. These book formats include Engagement Calendars, Deluxe Engagement Books, Postcard Calendars, Pocket Calendars and a Birthday Book.

The Pomegranate engagement calendars are a set of medium-sized books that are spiral-bound with black or white wire. They are either bound with thick paper boards or hardback boards and occasionally come with plastic protector sheets. They are week-to-view and are designed to have engagement details written in them.
The first Pomegranate engagement calendar was also the first item Pomegranate produced for Gorey. It is entitled: An Edward Gorey Bestiary Engagement Calendar 1984.
For this publication, Pomegranate is called Pomegranate Artbooks. An unusual aspect of this publication was that it came with either white or black wire spiral binding.
They also created a proof-of-concept version of the calendar which included just January (with preceding week end in December and the first full week of February). This uses a completely different title/copyright page from the final version and, rather bizarrely, has a colouring change to the week commencing January 23rd for the panel from [The Untitled Book] "thoo." (pictured above). As far as I'm aware this was only created with black wire binding.
From 2002-2007 the engagement calendar format was one of the regularly published yearly formats. 2002 started with a very slim The Gilded Bat, it had fairly flimsy card front and back plates with 6-month-to-view flaps on the inside of each (Jan->Jun, Jul->Dec). Following are a Title page, Copyright page, short Bio page, a double page spread of year-to-view. Then, a piece of Gorey art and wording is partnered with a month-to-view page (with samples from the art opposite); followed by week-to-view pages with artwork and samples added every few pages. It ends with the January 12th, a two page spread of the coming 2003 year-to-view; three pages of 2002 international holidays; two pages of International Calling codes; a Notes page and a Personal information page. A second version of the 2002 engagement calendar with added front and back plastic-protectors was also created.
From 2003-2006 the engagement calendars all look very uniform from the outside: they always have hard plastic protectors to the front and back, with the front always featuring some printed red or black text. They are always bound with black-wire and thick spirals. They are exclusively red, black and white coloured.
2003 starts off the same as 2002 (Title page, Copyright page, short Bio page, a double page spread of year-to-view) but then they have a full month-to-view page for each month before diving into a double-page spread of Gorey art/words, it then does week-to-view with occasional double page spreads until the first full week of January. It finishes with a two page spread of the coming year-to-view; two pages of International Holidays; two pages of International Calling codes; month-pair (jan&feb, mar&apr, etc) Notes & Expenses pages; two Notes pages; Personal Information page and then the back cover.
2004 opts to go back to the month-to-view preceding each week-to-view month and single art/word pages replace the double-page spreads. International Calling Codes in now paired with Time Differences and the Notes & Expenses pages have been withdrawn.
2005 has a two-page bio which shifts the year-to-view onto either side of the same page. It ends with three Notes pages before it gets to the two-page 2006 year-to-view and then uses the same two-page International Holidays; two-page International Calling Codes/Time Differences; and Personal Information pages.
2006 goes back to a single bio page and moves the Notes pages to back after the International Calling Codes/Time Differences pages. The, now six, Notes pages have added Gorey art to accompany each page, and it ends with the normal Personal Information page.
For 2007 they changed the style of the engagement calendar with the example entitled GoreyRARE: Thirty-Two Little-Known Works by Edward Gorey. This example has no plastic protectors, instead being sandwiched with two thick and rigid aqua-coloured boards. The wire spiral-binding is in white and there is no red used in the image. The content follows the 2006 example, but they have gone back to two illustration-free Notes pages.
There was then a long gap until the design was bought back briefly for 2019-2021. For this short run, the size has dramatically changed to be more rectangular by shortening the width whilst keeping a similar (slightly taller) height. All of them are bound in white, much-smaller, wire spirals and they have gone back to the original 2002 no-plastic protector, thin card front & back pieces with 6-month-to-view inside flaps. The start remains the same (Title page, copyright page, bio page, double-page year-to-view, artwork/words (now with a caption that always starts "Edward Gorey (American, 1925-2000)" above the title of the piece (which is often Untitled illustration, or Illustration from [Book Title] by [Author's name]), month-to-view calendar page, before week-to-view engagement pages. It now ends with a full month of January, a two-month-per-page year planner, two-page International Holidays, two-page World Time Zone Map, a two page following year-to-view and ends with Personal Information.

The Pomegranate deluxe engagement calendars are a set of engagement calendars that started in 1998 and were produced until 2001. They have a uniform look. They are hardback, with red-fabric spines, black header with white text title, and black footer with white text year and the words deluxe engagement book. They are all fitted with a red-fabric bookmark sewn into the binding. They originally came shrink-wrapped in thin malleable plastic. They all start with red end-papers, double-page title page, copyright page, and the same intro-bio page text - although the sizing and layouts differ slightly. Then there are week-to-view pages dispersed with either single page or double page artwork, and, in the case of the 2001 gorey cats a title and information on where the image is from. They all end with the final full week containing the 31st of December, followed by a Personal Information page, two year-to-view pages for the current and following years, two of three Notes pages and a blank page.

The Pomegranate postcard calendar is a small-format, spiral-bound calendar designed to have special postcard pages torn out along a perforated line.
They are presented week-to-view (Mon-Sun) and include holiday & lunar cycle information, with every other page being a tear-out postcard. They start and end with full weeks even when the days include the preceding/succeeding years. The first pages include a title page, copyright page and a short bio page. The last pages include a Notes page, a year-to-view of the current year, a year-to-view of the following year and a personal information page.

The Pomegranate pocket calendar is a small-format (~H14.6cm x W10.2cm), white wire spiral-bound calendar that is designed to fit in your pocket.
There were only three versions of this calendar created for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005. They are presented week-to-view (Mon-Sun) and include holiday & lunar cycle information. There is a month-to-view calendar at the start/end of each month and a two-page spread (with a Gorey quote on the left and Gorey illustration on the right) at the start/end of each month. The first pages include a title page, copyright page and a short bio page. The last pages include a year-to-view of the following year, a personal information page and finally some information on other Gorey publications from Pomegranate together with Pomegranate postal information.

The Pomegranate Birthday Book was a one-off anniversary book printed in 2001 - it has no days of the week, instead meant to be used to mark special occasions throughout the year and to be reused each year.
This was also the first time that Verse Advice was published in book format, previously being published in The New Yorker in the January 11th 1993 issue.
The 1st of each month starts with a full page illustration from Verse Advice and then the following days are 3-per page (and additional Notes when there are not enough days) with occasional samples from the month's illustration in small boxes. Each new month has a different framing-colour to make skipping months easier when flicking through, and there is a white-ribbon sewn into the spine for page-marking. There is a list of Birth Flowers, Birthstones, Zodiac Signs and Anniversary Gifts Traditional & Contemporary at the back.

There have been and continue to be a significant number of unlicenced calendars. Some of these are of interest.

|---|---|---|---|
| Year | Photo of cover/box | Title | Notes |
| 2010 | [No photo] | The Gashlycrumb Tinies Calendar 2010 | There are said to be six copies of a miniature (2.2 x 3.6cm) unauthorised version of The Gashlycrumb Tinies issued (and signed) by Carrera. I have yet to come across an example! |
| 2026 | ![]() |
Ubiquitous Edward Gorey 2026 | A calendar was created by a friend of Patrice Miller to commemorate her 2025 Ubiquitous Edward Gorey exhibition at the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. It was presented to her as a 2025 Christmas present. There are only two copies. |
As well as the above, since 2021 there have been a large number of cheaply produced calendars printed by Amazon. They often include illustrations not by Edward Gorey and are often of very poor quality. The ‘publishers’ name changes frequently to avoid Amazon being able to easily stop the production. These are not discussed further here. A few examples from 2022 are shown below.
